International Women’s Day is today. This year’s theme is “A challenged world is an alert world and from challenge comes change. So let’s all choose to challenge.” This exemplifies everything I believe in and strive for.
The status quo is no longer acceptable, but it is certainly daunting to think about challenging the world to move forward. Every single one of us can take small steps in our own little worlds every day.
In my legal career, I speak up when another attorney calls me “kid” or “sweetheart”. Or when I walk into a deposition and the male attorneys sitting around the table think that I’m the stenographer instead of the other attorney. I always respond that I have a law degree just like them.
In my comedy career, I tell jokes on stage about men, sex, and relationships. I have the right to get on stage and talk about whatever I want without being judged or stereotyped. Men are heroes for talking about sex and women are sluts. That is a way of the past.
I am so tired of people complaining about women speaking their minds and calling out others for inequality and bias. We will not sit back and stay quiet to make you more comfortable. We are not intimidating. You are intimidated. Keep opening your beautiful mouth. Change the narrative. Change the status quo. Change the whole damn world.
